Be at the forefront of technology and science – study Bioinformatics in English!

Bioinformatics is one of the fastest-growing interdisciplinary fields today. This should come as no surprise; we are witnessing a revolution in biological sciences – a rapidly developing subject area in which collecting and processing information through software tools becomes increasingly important.

If you look up bioinformatics on the web you’ll read that it is a field of science which combines computer science, statistics, mathematics and engineering to analyze and interpret biological data, especially those from genome sequences and functional genomics. True, but at WWSIS „Horyzont” Bioinformatics in English is more than that. It is, in a manner of speaking, an „Computer Science-Plus” program. In other words, you get all the knowledge and practical know-how of a CS major plus additional expertise in biological and medical sciences. This formidable combination increases your employability prospects. Needless to say, studying such a relevant field in English makes your studies… well, doubly relevant. So, if your English is good enough, we urge you to consider Bioinformatics in English at WWSIS „Horyzont”.

About the Faculty
The Faculty of Bioinformatics was established in 2017, becoming the third organizational unit within the Wrocław Higher School of Information Technology. The Faculty of Bioinformatics offers first-cycle bioinformatics studies leading to the bachelor’s degree. The total duration of the first-cycle programme is seven semesters full-time or eight semesters part-time, and it leads to the preparation of a degree thesis, a degree examination, and finally the award of the bachelor degree.

The first-cycle programme will equip students with bioinformatics expertise, and the graduate will be a creative designer of solutions in that area. Graduates of the first-cycle programme will have specialist expertise and skills regarding information technology together with the fundamental knowledge of issues in mathematics, biology, chemistry, and biophysics as well as their practical applications. This will enable them to understand the mechanisms of biological processes important from the information technology point of view. Both the expertise and the skills are based on the thorough knowledge of fundamentals in the areas of technology and natural and exact sciences.

Graduates will have knowledge relating to issues concerning molecular modelling, structural bioinformatics, general and molecular genetics, genomics, genetic information semiotics, drug design, and protein structure description. Competences required to implement one’s medium-complexity projects will be gained regarding the preparation and performance of computer simulations and experiments and drawing relevant conclusions. It will be possible to resolve practical problems concerning the application of information technology to biology and chemistry. Graduates can use the knowledge in their professional work respecting legal and ethical rules. They understand the need to use IT methods to resolve issues arising out of the complexity of biological systems. They can formulate and resolve basic biological problems in an exact manner, using constantly changing up-to-date IT methods. They are prepared to obtain biological information, both in laboratories and from generally available databases, and to process and develop it using appropriate methods. They have an understanding of modern computer systems and knowledge enabling active involvement in the execution of bioinformatics projects.

Fields of study:
* Virtual Reality Methods in Bioinformatics
* Biological Data Analysis and Processing
* Informatics in Medicine
